C-Suite 301: Showing Up as a Leader for Your Team
I have coached engineering clients, doctors, dentists, surgeons, lawyers–at some point, everyone has to have a difficult conversation with a colleague or client.
Step One: Fix Your Mindset.
You have to change YOUR mindset first–not your colleague’s. What is the goal of that tough conversation? Do you want your colleague to just do what you tell them, or would you rather EMPOWER them to succeed on their own?
Step Two: Make Vision Clear.
Effective leaders have a clear vision and sense of direction. They can articulate a compelling future that inspires others.
Step Three: Listen with Empathy
If you try to understand and truly care about the feelings and perspectives of your colleagues, you will build a supportive team who has your back.
Step Four: Ensure Mutual Understanding
After listening actively, then convey your ideas clearly — fostering openness and reducing misunderstandings.
Step Five: Empower Them
If you come from a place where you lead with SERVICE rather than AUTHORITY, you will always be on the right track. Great leaders empower those around them to help achieve their vision. Help develop others by providing opportunities, trust and the tools needed to succeed.
